About Reading Time Estimator
The reading time estimator divides your word count by a typical adult silent-reading rate of 225 words per minute. It's the same metric used in 'X-min read' labels on Medium, blog posts, and articles. The estimate is approximate — actual reading speed varies with content complexity and reader skill.
When to use it
- Producing the 'X-min read' label for a blog post or article
- Setting expectations for a long internal document
- Estimating audience attention span for a draft
- Comparing the length of two pieces of writing
How it works
The text is tokenized into words (runs of letters and digits with optional internal apostrophes/hyphens), and the count is divided by 225 words per minute. The result is formatted as minutes and seconds.
Examples
1,000 words / 225 wpm ≈ 4.4 minutes
[1,000 words of prose]
≈ 4m 27s
Frequently asked questions
- Why 225 words per minute?
- It's the median of adult silent-reading studies. Faster end (~250–300 wpm) for fluent readers on familiar material; slower end (~150 wpm) for technical or unfamiliar content.
- How is it different from speaking time?
- Silent reading is faster than speaking. Speaking pace is around 130–150 wpm; reading pace is 200–250 wpm. Use the speaking-time tool for audio/podcast estimates.
- Should I trust the estimate exactly?
- Treat it as a rough guide. Dense technical content reads slower; casual blog posts can read faster. The label is more useful as a relative comparison than an absolute timer.
